What to Pack for Your Destination Elopement

Planning a destination elopement is all about freedom, adventure, and focusing on what matters most, your love story. As a destination elopement and wedding photographer, I always tell my couples to prepare for their elopement! Whether hiking to a mountaintop, saying “I do” on the beach, or sneaking away to a romantic city, packing intentionally ensures your day goes smoothly (and looks fantastic in photos too!). From practical things you can’t forget to personal touches, here’s everything you need to bring to make your destination elopement unforgettable.

Wedding Attire & Accessories: More Than Just the Dress

Your wedding attire is the show’s star; after all, it is part of what makes this day so special! This includes your dress or suit, veil, tie, socks, jewelry, and anything else that makes you look your best. Don’t forget your rings and ring boxes! The boxes keep your rings safe and photograph beautifully in your detail photos. I always recommend a hard-shell garment bag for your wedding dress or suit, and carrying it on with you if you’re flying, your outfit deserves first-class treatment.

Vows, Marriage License, and All the Legal Stuff For Your Destination Elopement

In the excitement of planning, these essentials can slip your mind, but they’re the heart of the ceremony. Pack your handwritten vows (on your phone or vow books), your marriage license, and a pen (seriously, don’t leave that behind!). If your elopement is happening in a national park or protected area, you may need permits too (I can help with permits). After all, these little papers carry a lot of importance on your big day!

Details That Tell Your Love Story at Your Destination Elopement

Flat-lay photos are a beautiful way to document the feel of your destination elopement. Pack thoughtful extras like your save-the-dates, custom stationery, a map of the area, or even a postcard to send home. These items help tell the story of your day and make for gorgeous, editorial-style images that capture your personality and planning.

Beauty & Touch-Up Essential

Even if you’ve booked a makeup artist, bringing your beauty kit is a must. Touch-ups are essential, especially in windy, warm, or humid conditions. Toss in lipstick, setting spray, a mini hairspray, bobby pins, and anything else you’ll want to freshen up with later in the day. Bonus tip: Pack these in a clear bag so you can grab them quickly mid-hike or on the go.

Footwear & Layers: Be Cute AND Practical

That picture-perfect mountaintop moment? It will feel much better if you’re not climbing in stilettos. Bring a change of shoes to ensure a safe adventure! Comfy hiking boots or flats are your best friends before and after the ceremony. And always bring warm layers, even if your destination seems sunny. Weather can change instantly; a clear raincoat or cozy shawl can save the day without hiding your outfit.

Hydration, Snacks & Skincare

When you’re exploring all day, staying fueled is key. Bring a reusable water bottle and easy snacks like granola bars, trail mix, or fruit pouches. Toss in sunscreen, bug spray, and sunglasses to stay protected and comfortable throughout your elopement. No one wants to get sunburned before the golden hour portraits!

Keep the Vibe Alive: Music & Bubbly

One of my favorite parts of a destination elopement is the celebration after the “I do.” Pack a portable speaker to play your favorite playlist during your vows or first dance. Bring champagne or your favorite drink to pop after the ceremony. It’s a great way to mark the moment and grab some joyful, candid photos. (Double-check the rules for alcohol at your location!)

Stay Charged & Organized for Your Destination Elopement

Phones are crucial for navigation, communication, and even after party music. Don’t forget chargers or a fully charged power bank. Keep all your gear in a comfortable backpack that fits your vibe (because yes, it’ll probably end up in a few photos!). A well-packed bag can hold your snacks, beauty kit, layers, vows, and speaker without breaking your back or aesthetic.

Packing for your destination elopement doesn’t have to be overwhelming — it’s just about being prepared so you can relax and soak in every magical second. Every couple’s list might look a little different, and that’s part of what makes your elopement uniquely yours.
