How to Get Married In Hawai’i – Marriage Laws for Your Big Island Elopement

First, let’s make things legal! In order to get married on the Big Island you need to apply for a marriage license. To apply for a marriage license you’ll need to meet with an agent or complete the application online. Make sure you do this 30 days before your ceremony date. While planning your appointment, make sure to bring valid photo IDs and any other necessary documents. It’ll cost $65 for your marriage license and once those fees are paid you’re good to go!

Keep in mind a few things about your marriage license. It must be used within 30 days of picking it up, and the license is only valid in Hawai’i. If you aren’t able to get married within those 30 days the license becomes void.

If you want to snag your license while your on the island, you totally can! Head to the Health State Department of Health – Kinau Hale. Their office is open Monday-Friday from 8:00am to 4:00pm.

Plan Ahead and Prepare

Throughout the elopement planning process, keep in mind the nature of your day. This step is a simple reminder to be prepared to follow specific regulations, and think everything through. Some examples provided were to visit in small groups, avoid high traffic times, and repackage food to minimize waste. Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces

While you may not be camping on your trip on the Big Island – although if you are, I love your adventurous hearts! Follow the trails, don’t make your own paths. In doing this you can harm plant life and we are encouraged to find an established campsite. No need to make your own!

Dispose of Waste Properly

Throughout your whirlwind adventure, you may want to take souvenirs from the landscape, please don’t. You should totally examine, and photograph everything you see, however, leave rocks and plants as you find them. Leave them for the next couple of lovebirds to check out when they elope!

Minimize Campfire Impacts

If you choose to camp, keep campfires small and be careful! Only use down or dead wood for your fires as a way to maintain the land.

Respect Wildlife

Next, respect wildlife. Observe the animals from a distance and don’t feed them! They’re cute and are just living their lives, just like you two!
